The illuminating flare and parachute are contained within the cylindrical body of the bomb. A variable-delay time fuse is fitted to the nose of the bomb. The tail unit contains the primary cartridge and carries augmenting charges.

- Primary Cartridge for 81 mm Mortar Bomb
The Primary Cartridge case is manufactured from rolled paper in the form of an open ended cylinder, with a brass head along the lower part and bottom of the cartridge case. A fire transmission tube with flash holes is secured in the centre of the cartridge, a Percussion primer is fitted centrally in the case of the cartridge and the mouth of the cartridge is closed by means of closing discs and the top rimmed to keep the closing discs in position.

The payload consisting of an illuminating flare and parachute is contained within the body of the bomb. A variable time fuze activates expulsion charge that simultaneously ignites the flare and ejects the payload off the tail unit.
